Embraced by the natural beauty of the Columbia Gorge, this residential retreat required lighting that would venerate the surrounding sightlines and magnificent views, yet highlight the interior architecture. Our creative challenge was to work with the interplay of reflections from various sightlines; mirroring the architecture in the reflecting pool, while minimizing images of light reflected in the glass curtain walls.

a two-story condo in a seven-story mixed-use building designed by Tom Kundig. Built on the site of a former horse stable, this urban infill project offered Architect, Rhoady Lee, and opportunity to transfer two floors into a modern and dramatic, yet cozy residence. Eleven foot ceilings and walls of windows provide views of the mushrooming Seattle skyline. The Owner and Architect requested state of the art lighting, using a palette of warm light. Received the 2011 AIA Housing Award and was named Residential Architect Magazine’s 2011 Project of the Year.

Our concept for lighting was ‘See the Forest through the Trees’. So we up-lit the back side of select architectural beams leading the eyes to the heavens above. And to the majestic organ which had never been lit before.
Our assignment was to uplight the architecture and downlight the pews, choir loft, and altar, from existing locations to be maintained from a 20’ extension ladder. We achieved the Committee’s goals and reduced the energy consumptionby 75%.

a 3800 square foot contemporary residence on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. The Owner wanted us to light up the interior open space like a lantern; up-lighting the dramatic curved tongue & groove ceiling from the sidewalls and taking advantage of the triangular trusses to mount downlights. Inner reflections had to be carefully studied since there were 8’ by 16’ sections of the curtain wall that pivoted for ventilation and drama.

an intimate office concept based on changing color and light in motion. The clients requested splashes of dramatic light controlled with a DMX computer system. All lights were pre-set to cross-fade in slow motion so the viewer was only subliminally aware of the changing light.

as the lighting consultant to artist Dale Chihuly, the goal was to make the 12’ foot diameter glass sun and glass moon appear luminous from within. The challenge was to create this effect using recessed lights located in the architectural ceiling grid above.

an 8000 square foot residence situated in a marshy grassland of the Pacific NW. This geometric house was designed as a meeting place for both art and wild life. The owners wanted to immerse themselves in nature, and surround themselves with art and light. We designed lighting features like the glowing glass bridge to complement daylight or add drama after dusk.

a 5000 square foot sculptural residence designed to house a major art collection and a family of six. We designed the lighting to accentuate paintings, sculptures, and rich architectural materials, in balance with the lighting requirements for living. In collaboration with the architects, we up-lit the
glass floor from the media room below, and hid
the gallery track above the ceiling planks.

Taking advantage of the aluminum grating ceiling material, we created an abstract lighting solution, eliminating the predictable dropped ceiling and conventional office lighting solution. We floated LED flat panels above the aluminum grating which served as a continuous baffle to the brightness. Abstract light coming through the bar grating changes the perception of what is artificial light in this setting.

a 3,500 square foot contemporary condominium in downtown Seattle overlooking Elliot Bay. Lighting was designed to offer two images: 1) the daytime image, supplementing daylight and the grey skies of Seattle, and 2) the nighttime image, lighting the space after dusk using a minimum number of recessed downlights to enliven the interior.

integral to the parabolic staircase, Mexican muralist Pablo O’Higgins created the 3-story mural depicting Hawaii’s labor and racial history. The significance of this project centers on the mural itself, but the artwork is inextricable from its architectural setting. We restored and updated the lighting to celebrate the experiential artwork and this 1951 historic landmark.

Dale Chihuly was commissioned by Steve Wynn to create an art glass ceiling for the new Bellagio Hotel. Wynn wanted the glass to spill out from the ceiling as if there was a skylight above. dePelecyn studio worked with Chihuly to create a 6’ foot deep lightbox to simulate a skylight and backlight the suspended blown glass. We used the perimeter cove as a lightshelf to mount spotlights to fully illuminate the blown glass.
